Hi All

I haven't been on for a while. I saw my consultant for a review in June and all seems to be stable at the moment apart from still feeling tired and the normal pains!!!!

I visited the Dr a few weeks back as I have a sore mouth well its my tongue that is extremely sore. The first Dr prescribed steriod paste and it didin't work at all. The second Dr said I have thrush and prescribed Daktarin gel it still hasn't cleared up so I went back last week and saw another Dr who couldn't see thrush in my mouth but said he would write to my consultant at the hospital to see if it could be my tablets that are causing it. I take Sulfasalazine hydroq - forgotten how to spell it!! and a stomach protection tablet.

I was wondering if anyone else has suffered from an extremely sore tongue? and if it has been related to the tablets that you take.

Thanks
Debs Smile

Hi Debs,

I had to stop taking Methotrexate due to having lots of mouth ulcers. I think a lot of the DMARDS can do this to us. I saw an Oral Health consultant about it and he suggested taking friendly bacteria as found in Activia yogurts. Instead of taking the yogurts I take Acidophilus which I get from the internet or Holland and Barrett.

I hope your tongue heals quickly as it must be very painful for you.

hi Debs,

the only other thing i can think of is something called Geographic or Geographical tongue, i've not had it but know someone who has.

it makes a lot of lines over the tongue hence the name i think, and is very sore.

was just a thought if it turns out not to be RA related.

I suffer ulcers and was told that it was the tablets. They are horrid and makes you feel
very low. I get them frequently.

Have you tried the old fashioned cure - warm water and salt - gargle and spit out. I
must admit I do this. I find that sucking throat type sweets make things worse. Also
bongela.

Good luck

Hi Debs,

Anaemia can make the tongue sore and so can low vitamin B. Don't know if you've been checked for either of these.
Hope you find the answer soon.

Hi

I get very sore tongue and Im sorry to say it is immune related and I have geographical tongue.

Treatment of steroids, better control of the immune things helps.

I have to avoid sharper fruits etc.

Hi All

Thank you for your replies. I am still waiting to hear from my dr who has contacted my consultant. I have cut down on fruit and I eat natural probiotic yogurt but unfortunately its still very sore. I just feel its another thing that I am learning to live with!!!! Sad Hopefully it will be sorted soon.
